A note about what you said about the jump from 500mhz to 1.7ghz in a single generation is a little misleading. We had several iterations of the pentium 3 before we moved on to the 4. I had a P3 1000mhz. I overclocked it to just over 1.1ghz. Another fun thing to note is that the P2 socket was the same style as a dimm slot, and the chip was on an isolated board and slid into the mobo like an SNES cartridge.

Buying a computer in '93 meant laying out a lot of cash for a pre-built that wasn't necessarily up to gaming, and neither was Windows.

I had an Integraph Z workstation (basically intel based dual processor answer to the silicon graphics machines) back in 1998.. both those machines looked really sharp for the time but it was incredibly hard to find a OEM case you could buy that was good looking back then. If you wanted a good looking machine you were spending thousands upon thousands for a custom workstation.

It’s was crazy back than everything changed so fast it was hard to keep up on stuff and everytime you built a top end system it was outdated so fast, I actually got out of the computer field around 2009 didn’t get back into it til 2018 😬 defiantly is a lot better now except for shortages and mining crap going on now

I used to have to upgrade every couple years, because you would easily double the performance of your old system sometimes. PC technology has really leveled off especially in the last 10 years.

The craziest part is the games aren't too much different looking in 2021. In some cases, the games are now more cartoonish. They put a much bigger emphasis on realism back then, and also sound was very important as you can tell.

Kyle, if you want an idea for a video in the future, maybe consider contacting Mr. Cheifet? Seems like the man is elderly, but still with us! Would be awesome to get his take on how computing has changed in recent times compared to back then. While he wasn't a true techie, he did have a lot of interactions with technology through the ages, and it would be cool to hear his take on this era of computing.

I don’t know if you made this to make 28 year olds feel old but congrats. Yes pentiums had single cores, and yes there was no cutouts to hide cables. In fact, you’d be lucky to have dedicated airflow cutouts aside from having your 80mm power supply spit out hot air

Try using original sound in the early 90s with the 2" built in speaker before external was a thing. Real nice chirp and beep, complete immersion. And no physical copy is the reason I will never touch PCs again. They stop supporting the title then you wasted money and that's unacceptable

what I really miss are cheesy advertising lines. Like I got an older PC Case for my new build here and it says "Creating Passion" on the Box. AMAZING! others like "Envisioning Future", they are so dumb and that's what makes them great. sadly I think because too many people realised that these slogans are so dumb they stopped doing it, ruining the fun for everyone... People are so serious now that the friendly mockery back then would turn into blatant outbursts of fury...

Dude, Black & White was an awesome game. I was really disappointed when I couldn't run it on modern hardware anymore. Also, Netburst architecture was horrid on thermals. Original AMD Athlon series was hugely successful in part due to how complacent Intel had become in releasing the P4 series. You could get pretty much as good performance out of the AMD chips, albeit at a lower clock speed but with way lower temps. History repeating with the Zen architecture in a lot of ways.

oh boy, I'm old LOL. I instantly recognized both of those games. the sound demo. That was Forsaken by Acclaim like the guy said. its basically a "pretty for its time" Descent clone. nothing noteworthy really. the pentium 4 demo. that is Giants Citizen Kabuto. and I did not even need to google. LOL. I remember it because it had a strange name I'm actually surprised that wasn't used in the Nvidia demo as that game was known for using a good handful of nvidia tech. it was a "cutting edge directX 8.0" game..LOL I think it had special features that required a geforce 3 GPU I also recall it for it being extremely buggy (kinda like cyberpunk at launch :) I also recall it being system-demanding Giants is kinda like a RTS FPS hybrid I never actually played the full game (only the demo) and it had a good sense of humor from what I recall. good game. I have Black and White...I didn't like it either haha. Falcon northwest is still very much around and their prices haven't gone down LOL. they where the first "gaming PC" type company before Vodoo before Alienware.. and shout out to good ol quake 3 arena. that was THE benchmark used for game benchmarks for years

Lol, in 2001, eleven year-old me was just building my first PC from Goodwill scraps. That got me a Pentium 100MHz CPU and Windows 95 on a 5GB HDD and GeForce 256. Previously I had been using the family Commodore Amiga 1000. Three years later, my parents bought me an eMachines T1300 1.3Ghz Celeron, I ended up putting an ATI X700 Pro in it and it fried the PSU. After that I've only built my own computers. One of the first being an Antec case identical to that green Alienware monstrosity only black and with Antec badging. That board (Maximus II Formula) ended up going from Pentium 4 all the way to Core 2 Quad before selling it and getting my Core i7 Extreme build. So much nostalgia.

I so remember that standard alienware case, I had a few of the beige Antec versions that housed a whopping 3x 80mm intakes and 2x 80mm exhaust. Actually for the time they were great cases to build in. Easy off side panel and locking hard drive bays. I remember selling people the new hyper threaded P4's and when the first AMD 64bit chip that came out. PC's are still fun for me but even though games are far more developed with larger worlds and better graphics I simply don't get as absorbed into them like I used too. Something about the real world and life.
